A Contemporary Home Rooted in Tradition
Located in Classic Orchards, Kaluve House is the result of multiple design iterations shaped by a close understanding of the family’s lifestyle. While contemporary in daily use, the home draws deeply from South Indian cultural sensibilities, weaving traditional spatial ideas into a modern domestic framework.
Interpreting Regional Traditions
The house fuses elements from traditional South Indian homes with select influences from North India. Features such as the jagali, common in Karnataka, are reinterpreted using familiar building components, while jharokhas and terrace rooms inspired by Rajasthani architecture add depth and character. These elements are not applied ornamentally, but are integrated into the spatial and functional logic of the house.

Planning, Orientation and Light
The plan is oriented to maximise usable landscape and outdoor connections. Natural light plays a central role, guided by the careful placement, orientation and treatment of openings. The design balances openness and privacy through interconnected spaces layered across three levels, with transitions mediated by external landscape areas.

Vastu and Spatial Order
Vastu principles inform key planning decisions—ranging from site slopes and the placement of the pooja space to the emphasis on the brahma-sthana as the spatial core. Axial alignments and visual focus reinforce this organisation, lending clarity and calm to the overall layout.
Sustainability and Water Management
An elaborate rainwater harvesting system collects surface runoff and channels it into a well, supplying the household with water for extended periods. This system significantly reduces reliance on municipal water and forms an integral part of the project’s sustainable approach.
A separate yet seamlessly integrated servant quarter ensures privacy and ease of use without intruding upon the primary living spaces, completing a home that balances tradition, comfort and environmental responsibility.
